RONNIE GASPED appropriately and quickly set the now empty glasses on the bar to reach for a stack of cocktail napkins. “I am so sorry,” she said, as she began swiping at the wine she’d intentionally spilled on Clark.

“It’s okay,” he said calmly, taking the napkins from her. “Accidents happen.”

She offered her sweetest smile. “This is completely my fault,” she told him, hoping he couldn’t see through her saccharine routine. “Silly me, I wasn’t paying attention.”

Much to her relief, he smiled down at her as if to set her at ease. He did have a nice smile, even if he was a suspected drug smuggler, and intense blue eyes she safely assumed took in everything around him.

“There’s no need to concern yourself,” he said kindly, taking more dry napkins from the holder.

She managed a nervous-sounding laugh and handed a few more cocktail napkins to him. She couldn’t believe their incredible luck, to have actually made contact with Clark on their first night out. With any luck, she and Blake would be wrapping up the case in a day or two and she’d be taking the steps necessary to lead her own life. “I’m not usually so clumsy. I promise to pay for the cleaning.”

“That’s not necessary,” he said, his deep, smooth voice showing no signs of impatience. He signaled for the bartender, who immediately left what he was doing to attend to Clark. “Two more of whatever the lady just ordered.”

“Right away, Mr. Clark.”

Judging from the bartender’s swiftness, it was obvious Alister Clark got what he wanted, when he wanted, telling Ronnie loud and clear the man was either a regular patron at the resort or, as Blake believed, somehow connected to the resort on a more personal level. Maybe buried under a series of dummy corporations? She was beginning to think it highly possible.

“I really do insist on paying for the cleaning,” she said, trying to determine what her next move should be. Thanks to McCall, they knew Clark would be in the area for at least a few days, which wasn’t all that long considering they needed to find out if he was involved in the smuggling. “Do you have a card? I’ll put my room number on it so you can have the bill sent to me.”

“Don’t think twice about it.” He settled his hand on her arm and squeezed ever so gently. His touch was cool, his hands smooth, not at all calloused. She thought of a snake, one of those big, thick ones that strangled its prey, and she very nearly cringed at the touch.

“Ronnie, honey? Is everything okay?”

She let out a sigh at the sound of Blake’s voice. Not one of relief, she told herself firmly. After all, she was used to the Alister Clarks of the world.

She turned and smiled at her partner. “Just my usual clumsy self,” she said, throwing in another nervous laugh for effect. “This is…I’m sorry, what did you say your name was?”

“Clark,” he said, reaching to shake Blake’s hand.
